Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji, OON is a Nigerian banker, entrepreneur, and philanthropist who serves as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank Plc. Appointed in June 2024, she is the first woman to lead the institution since its founding, marking a historic milestone in Nigeria’s banking industry.
Umeoji holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology from the University of Jos and a second Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Baze University, Abuja. She earned an MBA from the University of Calabar, a Master of Laws from the University of Salford in the United Kingdom, and a Doctorate in Business Administration from Apollos University. Her executive education includes the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School, the Global Banking Program at Columbia Business School, the Strategic Thinking and Management Program at Wharton, and a Certificate in Economics for Business from MIT Sloan School of Management.
Umeoji began her career at Zenith Bank, rising steadily through the ranks. She was appointed to the bank’s board in October 2012, later serving as Deputy Managing Director from October 2016 to May 2024 before assuming the role of Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. In these leadership roles, she has played a central part in driving Zenith Bank’s growth, governance, and innovation across Nigeria and beyond.
Her contributions to finance and community development have earned her numerous honors. She received the national title of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) in 2022 and was recognized by the United Nations (UN-POLAC) as a Peace Advocate. In 2023, she received The Sun’s Humanitarian Services Icon of the Year Award, followed by multiple accolades in 2024 and 2025, including Banker of the Year from Leadership Newspaper, the Outstanding Female Bank Managing Director Award from Women in Aviation International (Nigeria Chapter), and the Community Excellence Award from Rotary District 9142. She was also honored by the Association of Professional Women Bankers for her leadership, by the National Association of Online Security News Publishers as Security Conscious Bank CEO of the Year, and by Nnamdi Azikiwe University’s Centre for Sustainable Development for her advancement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
